Lighting Care Tips

Place your Calandiva potted plants in a spot with bright and indirect light. Try to avoid placing the plant in harsh direct sunlight. In the winter, once the flowers have bloomed, the plant can take medium levels of light, preferably near a south-facing window. In the summer place the Calandiva plant in an east or west facing window. If you see that your Calandiva plant looks thin, it is probably not getting enough light.

Watering Care Tips

Water your plant sparingly at the base of the soil, once every one to two weeks or when the soil feels completely dry. If you forget to water your Calandiva, it will be fine being under-watered as well. If your house or office is humid and your environment is cold, make sure the soil is almost dry before watering it again.

The best way to check if your Calandiva plant needs water is to stick a bamboo or wood skewer into the soil, wait a second and pull it out. If it comes out clean and feels dry then it’s time to water your plant. To learn more, read our article ‘How do I Know When to Water my Plants?’

Pruning Care Tips

Simple pruning now and then of your Calandiva potted plant goes a long way. At the end of the flowering period, it’s a good idea to cut back the taller leaves of the plant, cutting below the second or third new leaf of each stem. Pause and take a step back to check the plant’s overall shape and remove any leaves to maintain the full and bushy look. If you do this, your flowers will have a better shape for the future

Flowering Care Tips

Calandivas typically flower in the late winter and spring. To promote flowering, at the start of fall, place your plant in a dark area at least 14 hours a day for about 6 weeks, such as a room you do not use at night or in a closet. During the day, pull it out and place it in indirect light then tuck it back into a place with no lights at night. Also during this time, water less than you normally would. After 6 weeks, you should start to notice buds forming. At this time, move your plant to spot with bright and indirect light, and enjoy the flowers blooming.

If you like to rebloom your plant later, trim away some of the foliage that hide stems that may produce buds then follow the steps in the above paragraph and enjoy your Calandiva potted plant flowers every spring.

Calandivas are easy to care for, and have long lasting blooms that add some springtime colour to the home or office decor making them the perfect gift for yourself, friend or family member.
